Nikah Booking Procedure

To arrange a Nikah ceremony with an Imam from Osmondthorpe, please read the following requirements carefully. These guidelines help ensure that everything runs smoothly and avoids any misunderstandings on the day of the ceremony.

1. Family Awareness and Consent

Both families should be aware of, or have agreed to, the marriage. We encourage openness and family involvement wherever possible.

2. Religious Requirements

If either the bride or groom is a revert to Islam, they must have accepted Islam by taking the Shahadah. If a Shahadah certificate is not available, the Shahadah will be repeated, recorded, and officially registered at Osmondthorpe before the Nikah can take place.

3. Required Documents

Please provide the following documents:

  • A copy of your passport
  • A driving licence or a recent utility bill as proof of address
  • Your civil marriage certificate, or confirmation of your civil marriage booking for the same day as the Nikah

4. Age Requirement

Both the bride and groom should be at least 18 years old.

If either party is under 18, permission from a parent or legal guardian is required. The Imam will also need sufficient time to assess the circumstances before making a decision. This includes considering the groom’s ability to fulfil his Islamic financial responsibilities (maintenance), or, if the wife has agreed to support her husband financially, ensuring this arrangement is fully understood and agreed upon.

5. Attendance of the Bride and Groom

Both the bride and groom must be present for the Nikah ceremony. Ideally, they should be in the same building or venue.

6. Presence of the Bride’s Wali or Wakeel

The bride’s Wali (guardian) or an authorised Wakeel (representative) should be present during the Nikah.

Marriage is a joyful occasion that should include and respect both families. Osmondthorpe does not perform secret or runaway marriages. If a guardian cannot attend or is overseas, the Imam may contact them to confirm their knowledge of and consent to the marriage.

7. If the Wali Is Unable or Unwilling to Attend

If the Imam is satisfied that permission was sought from the Wali, but consent was withheld solely because of cultural, racial, or caste-related reasons, the Nikah may still be conducted and will be considered valid according to Islamic guidance.

8. Witnesses

Two adult Muslim male witnesses must be present for the Nikah. They should be of sound mind and able to provide valid identification, such as a British passport.

Where possible, it is recommended that one witness represents each family. Together with the bride’s Wali or Wakeel, there will be three people witnessing the Nikah.

9. Immigration Status

There must be no immigration restrictions or legal barriers preventing either the bride or groom from entering into marriage.

Nikah Fees

A £100 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your Nikah booking. Bookings must be made at least one week before your preferred date. Please note that your booking will only be confirmed once the deposit has been received.

Nikah at Osmondthorpe Mosque

The total fee is £200, which includes the £100 non-refundable deposit payable at least one week before the ceremony.

Nikah at an External Venue

If you would like the Nikah to take place at a venue of your choice within a two-mile radius of Osmondthorpe Mosque, the fee is £200, with a £100 non-refundable deposit required at least one week before the event.

For venues located more than two miles from Osmondthorpe Mosque, the family arranging the Nikah will be responsible for organising suitable transport for the Imam.

Civil Marriage Registration

A Nikah performed by an Imam is a religious marriage and, on its own, is not legally recognised as a civil marriage. To ensure your marriage is legally valid, Osmondthorpe requires all couples to have their civil marriage registered before the Nikah or provide confirmation of a booked civil registration appointment on the same day.

If there is reason to believe that the marriage will not be legally registered, the Imam may decline to perform the Nikah.

For more information about the civil marriage registration process, please get in touch with us. Osmondthorpe is also a registered venue for civil marriage ceremonies.
